A comprehensive guide to installing Ubuntu for the beginner.


1. System Requirements.

* 700 MHz CPU. (Intel Celeron or better.)
* 1 GB of RAM.
* 20 GB Hard Drive
* VGA 1024 x 768.
* DVD Drive and software to create bookable DVD’s.
* Internet connection.

2. Preparation.

* Download Ubuntu ISO.
* Create bootable DVD.
* Backup everything!
* Make sure you have Internet access with a smart phone, tablet or second computer.
* Time to do install without distractions.
* Boot Ubuntu from live DVD and test your hardware.

3. Installation

* Use Ubuntu installer program to create partitions.
* Create user account.

4. Post Installation Setup.

* Disable search in Dash
* Update Ubuntu completely.
* Install Additional Drivers.
* Install codecs and other goodies from Terminal:
“sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras synaptic gdebi bleachbit htop”
* Install Java by running these commands one at a time:
“sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java”
“sudo apt-get update”
“sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer”
